Recent public opinion polls identify food safety as one of Canadians’ primary concerns with the agri-food system; yet Canada has one of the world’s most stringent regulatory systems. Studies also show that increasingly Canadians lack the basic knowledge and understanding of food safety and proper food handling practices.

Since trust and knowledge go hand-in-hand, the Canadian Federation of Agriculture aims to explore this challenge in an interactive session with various stakeholders, such as government officials, researchers, industry groups, public health leaders and communications experts. Together we’ll consider how improving of food safety awareness can help to build consumer confidence, and help reduce food-borne illnesses. Be part of our forum to find out about the latest research on consumer perceptions and best practices, and hear recommendations for the way forward.

Our event will be held in conjunction with the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity’s 2018 Public Trust Summit, an annual event that delves into the many aspects of industry-consumer relationships. Insights from this preceding event will help inform our food safety forum.

The Canadian Food Safety Forum will help to establish a stronger network among food system stakeholders, and generate recommendations for how to move forward. Participants will share perspectives on ways to build public confidence and increase educational efforts on safe food handling.

The forum will host senior representatives from federal, provincial, and municipal agriculture and health departments, as well as industry associations, private companies, academic institutions, and not-for-profit groups. A networking reception will follow the meeting.
