Commodities
Agricultural Production
There are five major agricultural production sectors in Canada. In order of importance to farm cash receipts, these are:
- grains and oilseeds (34%)
- wheat, durum, oats, barley, rye, flax seed, canola, soybeans, and corn
- red meats (27%)
beef cattle, hogs, veal, and lamb - dairy (12%)
- horticulture (9%)
- poultry and eggs (8%)
Commodities in Canada are produced for both domestic and export markets. The sectors of grains and oilseeds, and red meat have both a domestic and export orientation. The dairy, and poultry and eggs sectors are under a supply-managed system. This ensures that domestic production matches demand, while providing a fair return to producers. This type of system is oriented towards self-sufficiency in the domestic market. The horticultural sector is also oriented primarily towards the domestic market.
