OTTAWA - The Canadian Federation of Agriculture and its members welcome all newly elected MPs and look forward to working together with the government to fully capitalize on the agriculture sector's potential.
"We are particularly excited that all parties committed to drafting a long-term strategy for the Canadian food and agricultural sectors, an initiative begun with the CFA, its members and stakeholders along the value chain. Having a long-term plan and vision is invaluable in securing a viable and sustainable agri-food industry and food supply for growing domestic and international demand. The CFA looks forward to continuing to work with this government and all interested groups to ensure the momentum continues to grow, recognizing the diverse nature of Canadian agriculture," said CFA President, Ron Bonnett.
"The CFA also extends its congratulations to the former agricultural critics who won their respective ridings," added Bonnet. "Their knowledge and commitment to agriculture will serve farmers well as we move forward."
For all new MPs, the CFA looks forward to introductions and working together on key files for agriculture.
Priorities for farmers across Canada include:
• Changes to programming within Growing Forward before its April 2013 expiration date. The CFA and its members have outlined short, mid and long-term essential for a bankable and predictable suite of programs and policies.
• Development of a National Food Strategy - a long-term plan for agriculture and food, implemented in partnership with industry, government and consumers. All agricultural policy should be developed within this framework, instead of five year budgetary cycles, as is currently the case.
• Investment in agricultural research, restoring funding levels for agricultural research as an essential component to a globally-competitive agricultural sector.
• Creation of a strong, well-funded national program of Environmental Farm Plans and a cap-and-trade system that allows carbon offsets to be produced and sold by farmers.
"During the election campaign, all parties acknowledged that agriculture is a cornerstone of the country's economy," said Bonnett. "With proper investments in research, technology, programs and strategic market development, Canadian farmers can fill rising global and domestic demand for food, energy and fiber. Let's work together to make Canada a world leader in this regard and a key place for investment!".
