OTTAWA - The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) welcomes measures in the Border Action Plan announced today that will improve regulatory cooperation and reduce trade obstacles for Canada's agricultural sector.

"The announcement made today by Prime Minister Harper and President Obama includes positive initiatives to improve trade between Canada and the US. The CFA advised the government throughout this process on regulatory reform measures important to farmers, and the CFA is extremely pleased to see the key points raised for agriculture have been indentified and that agriculture is front and center in this proposal," said CFA President Ron Bonnett.

"Agricultural trade fuels the import and export activities in both countries. The economic benefits that will come from regulatory reform will significantly improve the business opportunities for Canadian farmers and subsequently, further drive the Canadian economy," added Bonnett.

"Canada's regulatory system must be structured to support agricultural innovation and provide access to new technologies needed to remain competitive in global markets. Unnecessary barriers and outdated regulations hamper trade possibilities and economic growth. If we want our farmers, agri-food businesses and all those along the agricultural value-chain to innovate and advance in markets, we need to provide them with the proper environment. This action-oriented agenda is a significant step in the right direction and we congratulate Prime Minister Harper on a bold initiative that will improve the competitiveness of Canadian farmers," Bonnett remarked.

CFA and its members are looking forward to working with government and providing input as specific initiatives are rolled out.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture is the country's largest farmers' organization, representing provincial general farm organizations as well as national and interprovincial commodity organizations from every province - over 200,000 Canadian farmers and farm families.
