(OTTAWA, Oct. 30, 2008)--The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) today welcomed Prime Minister Stephen Harper's reappointment of Gerry Ritz as the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

'On behalf of CFA members, I congratulate Minister Ritz on his reappointment, and look forward to meeting with him as soon as possible as we need to discuss a range of significant issues. Farm organizations value his demonstrated understanding of the sector and appreciate his recognition of our vital industry,' said Laurent Pellerin, CFA 1st Vice President.

'Farm groups across Canada are eager to continue their work with Minister Ritz to bring stability to the agriculture sector in this uncertain economic climate,' said Ron Bonnett, CFA 2nd Vice President. 'Certainly, we feel it's positive that with an experienced Minister we'll avoid the time delays that a new Minister may have required.'

Looking ahead, the Minister will face an array of pressing issues. In the immediate term, the unpredictable nature of market prices has underscored the need for added flexibility in business risk management programs. As well, much work remains on completing details for the new Growing Forward suite of programs, scheduled to begin April 1, 2009.

In international trade negotiations, CFA members are seeking a reiteration of Canada's balanced trade position. On environmental issues, farmers are asking the new government to recognize and compensate them for their important role in mitigating the effects of climate change and providing ecological goods and services. Other key issues include an ongoing funding commitment to on-farm food safety programs and initiatives to better facilitate the implementation of new 'Product of Canada' label guidelines.

CFA also looks forward to working with newly appointed ministers in other agriculture-related portfolios, including: Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade; Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment; Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources; and Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of National Revenue and Minister of State (Agriculture).
